We are a group of three university students working at a social network for yachting. The project is the assignment of our Web Science course.

8kn.de stands for the "figure eight" knot, which is commonly used under yachties to prevent lines from running out.
Actually, on yachts the word knot is used all over the place (e.g. speed).
We wanted a short and memorable domain, therefore we chose the short cut "8kn", where kn=knot.
